Speed River Inferno attracts 20 Olympians

GUELPH — A total of 20 Olympians are entered to compete in next Saturday's Speed River New Balance Inferno Track and Field Festival at Alumni Stadium.

The list of Olympians includes the host Speed River Track and Field Club's Alex Genest and Taylor Milne. Genest is to compete in the featured New Balance men's 3,000-metre steeplechase while Milne is to run in the Running Room men's 1,500 metres.

The Speed River Physiotherapy men's 800 metres features an international field with four Olympians. They are Cubans Andy Gonzalez and Raidel Acea, Moise Joseph of Haiti and Julius Mutekanga of Uganda. Anthony Romaniw of the host club is entered in the event as well as Richard Jones, Duncan Phillips and Lucas Manring of the U.S., Aaron Evans of Bermuda and Sean Obinwa of Nigeria and Canadians Alex Ullman and Corey Bellemore.

The Sport Canada women's 100-metre hurdles features Canadian Olympians Angela Whyte, Phylicia George and Nikkita Holder. It could be a photo finish between the trio as they come into the meet with similar qualifying times. Whyte is fastest at 12.63 seconds while George is at 12.65 and Holder is at 12.74.

The City of Guelph men's 200 metres includes Canadian Olympians Tremaine Harris and Gavin Smellie and Cuban Olympian Roberto Skyers. Also in the field are Canadians Dontae Richards-Kwok and Dushane Farrier, Rubin Williams and John Lundy of the U.S. and Reynier Mena of Cuba.

Other Olympians entered to compete are Canadians Crystal Emmanuel and Jenna Martin in the City of Guelph women's 200 metres, Sarah Wells of Canada and Egle Staisiunaite of Lithuania in the Province of Ontario women's 400-metre hurdles, Fabrice Lapierre of Australia in the Athletics Canada men's long jump, Greggmar Swift of Barbados in the Sport Canada men's 100-metre hurdles, Canadian Melisa Bishop in the New Balance women's 800 metres and Uhunoma Osazuwa of Nigeria is the Province of Ontario women's high jump.

The host club will have several of its athletes competing in the highlighted international program that is to start at 7 p.m.

Rachel Aubry is to compete in the women's 800 metres while Carise Thompson and Genevieve Lalonde are to race in the women's 1,500 metres.

Maja Naruscewicz is to leap in the women's high jump and the men's 1,500-metres field is to include Matt Jurysta and Kyle Grieve.

Chris Winter, Chris Dulhanty and Ben Preisner are to race in the men's 3,000-metre steeplechase.

The event with the most local athletes entered in it is the Speed River Track and Field Club men's 5,000 metres. The field is to include Ross Proudfoot, Aaron Hendrikx, Andrew Nixon and Barry Britt of the host club and Andrew Yorke of the Regional Triathlon Centre – Guelph.

The Inferno is part of the Canadian Track League this year and the international program includes 17 events and athletes representing 20 countries. Other countries with athletes in the meet include Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Germany, Great Britain, Jamaica, Mexico, New Zealand, Panama, St. Vincent and U.S. Virgin Islands.

The final event on the schedule, the men's 3,000-metre steeplechase, is set to go at 8:55 p.m.
